Gurugram, Haryana, India | 18th August 2025: Once famed for its pearl fisheries and bustling maritime trade, Thoothukudi is now entering a new era of industrial growth. On August 4, VinFast officially launched its 400-acre electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant at the SIPCOT industrial park, backed by an initial investment of $500 million and a planned phase-one capacity of 50,000 vehicles annually. The facility is set to transform the city into a hub for clean mobility and accelerate Tamil Nadu’s leadership in India’s fast-growing EV market.
VinFast’s Big Bet on India
Founded in 2017 under Vietnam’s Vingroup conglomerate, VinFast has quickly become Vietnam’s top-selling car brand, earning international recognition in North America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. India, with its booming EV demand and strong government support, was the natural next step.
After evaluating 15 potential sites across six states, VinFast chose Tamil Nadu for its world-class port infrastructure, skilled workforce, abundant land, and business-friendly policies. The new facility will integrate welding, painting, and final assembly under one roof, with the first Made-in-India VF 6 and VF 7 SUVs expected to roll out later this year.
VinFast’s India strategy goes beyond manufacturing. The company is:
- Partnering with RoadGrid and myTVS to set up hundreds of EV service centers.
- Collaborating with BatX Energies on battery recycling for a sustainable closed-loop system.
- Launching 35 dealerships in 27 cities through 13 dealer partners for wide market reach.
“VinFast is committed to making EVs more accessible in India while driving job creation and local economic growth,” said a company spokesperson, underscoring its vision as a global premium EV brand within reach of Indian buyers.
Tamil Nadu’s Roadmap: Building an EV Cluster in Thoothukudi
VinFast’s investment aligns with Tamil Nadu’s ambitious EV policy, which aims to expand manufacturing beyond Chennai’s crowded hubs. In the last four years, the state has attracted ₹7.51 trillion in investments, with southern districts like Thoothukudi accounting for nearly one-third of the total.
Thoothukudi is now slated to become:
- Tamil Nadu’s first all-electric vehicle cluster
- The state’s fourth major auto hub, joining Chennai, Coimbatore, and Hosur
- A center for motors, power electronics, battery manufacturing, and vehicle testing
The government’s EV Taskforce is coordinating with industry players to build a comprehensive supply chain ecosystem around the city.
Workforce Development: Training the Next Generation
To meet talent needs, the state’s “Naan Mudhalvan” program has already trained hundreds of students in technical, aptitude, and communication skills. VinFast has onboarded around 200 fresh graduates and is following an 80–20 staffing model, where local trainees and freshers form the majority, supported by a smaller group of experienced professionals.
The plant and its suppliers are expected to generate 3,000–3,500 direct jobs, with a multiplier effect creating up to 11 additional jobs per auto worker in supporting industries such as logistics, retail, and services.
Thoothukudi’s Transformation: From Pearls to EVs
VinFast’s arrival marks a turning point for Thoothukudi. Once a maritime hub celebrated for its pearls, salt, and dried fish exports, the city is now positioned to become a global center for electric mobility exports.
With state planning, global investment, and local workforce readiness, Thoothukudi is on track to emerge as India’s newest EV powerhouse—where thousands of battery-powered vehicles will soon roll out to markets across the world.
