Gurgaon, Haryana, India | 16th August 2025: India’s push to put millions of electric vehicles (EVs) on its roads by 2030 has gained a major boost from VinFast, the fast-growing Vietnamese EV manufacturer. In what one leading Indian daily described as “the fastest manufacturing scale-up by any foreign carmaker in India”, the company transformed an empty plot in Tamil Nadu into a state-of-the-art EV assembly plant in just 17 months — far ahead of the typical 24–36 months most large auto plants require.
Breaking Ground and Breaking Records
VinFast broke ground in February 2024 and inaugurated the facility in August 2025, shattering global benchmarks for speed and efficiency. The 400-acre site houses robotic body shops, automated paint lines, and an internationally trained workforce.
The plant’s location was no accident. VinFast evaluated 15 sites across six Indian states, prioritizing port access, robust infrastructure, skilled labor, and proactive government support. Tamil Nadu’s decisive facilitation efforts secured the project, with Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa emphasizing that the plant reinforces the state’s progressive industrial policies while driving job creation, economic growth, and technical skill development.
Capacity and Future Growth
The facility can initially produce 50,000 EVs annually, with scalability up to 150,000 units. An adjacent industrial zone will nurture local suppliers, fostering a complete EV manufacturing ecosystem.
Industry 4.0 at Work
Inside, 17 robots in the Body Shop collaborate with skilled welders, while the Paint Shop’s eight robots ensure flawless, multi-layer finishes. VinFast’s partnerships with ABB, Durr, Atlas Copco, Arrow, and Siemens have integrated advanced automation and precision quality systems. The Manufacturing Execution System tracks every step, with smart torque tools and 3D measurement systems verifying component accuracy before assembly.
Workforce Readiness from Day One
Even before construction was complete, VinFast launched a large-scale recruitment drive under the Naan Mudhalvan program in April 2025. By July, the first 200 workers were hired and trained to international standards. At full capacity, the plant will employ 3,000–3,500 people directly.
A Gateway for Exports
Strategically located near Thoothukudi Port, the plant is poised to become VinFast’s largest export hub for South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Orders from Sri Lanka and Mauritius are already confirmed, signaling a strong export trajectory.
Aligning with India’s Climate Goals
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin highlighted the plant’s dual role in boosting the southern district’s economy and contributing to India’s fight against global warming.
VinFast’s record-breaking construction speed is more than an operational milestone — it’s a bold statement of intent to compete in one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets, with future expansions promising even greater automation, higher output, and stronger Vietnam–India industrial ties.
